Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer can affect anyone, but early detection is key to successful treatment. Regular screenings can help identify signs of oral cancer or pre-cancerous conditions before they progress. At Aviator Dental Hygiene, we recommend an oral cancer screening as part of your routine dental check-up to ensure your health and well-being.

Advanced Oral Cancer Screening with VELscope®

At Aviator Dental Hygiene, we prioritize your oral health through advanced technology, including the VELscope® Oral Cancer Screening Examination. This innovative screening supports early detection of oral tissue abnormalities, allowing for more proactive and preventive care.

Using a specialized blue light and advanced optical filtering, the VELscope® system highlights changes in oral tissues that may not be visible during a standard exam. As part of our commitment to prevention, we offer complimentary VELscope® screenings during new patient check-ups to help protect your long-term health.

Who should get screenings?

Oral cancer can affect anyone, but certain factors may increase your risk. You may benefit from more frequent screenings if you:

  1. Use tobacco products or drink alcohol regularly
  2. Have a family history of cancer
  3. Have had significant exposure to the sun (which increases the risk of lip cancer)
  4. Experience persistent mouth sores, pain, or difficulty swallowing

What to expect during the screening:

Our oral cancer screening process is simple and thorough. The screening is non-invasive, painless, and only takes a few minutes, but it can make a significant difference in your health.

Visual examination

During your oral cancer screening, we carefully examine your mouth, throat, and tongue for any unusual growths, lesions, or changes in tissue appearance. This visual check helps us identify early warning signs that may not be noticeable to you. Detecting these changes early allows for faster follow-up and treatment if needed.

Physical Assessment

We gently feel around your neck, jaw, and throat to check for any lumps, swelling, or abnormalities. This step helps identify changes beneath the surface that may not be visible during a routine exam. It’s a quick and comfortable part of your screening that adds an extra layer of protection.

Symptom Identification

We look for signs such as persistent sores, red or white patches, or areas of ongoing discomfort. These symptoms can sometimes indicate early stages of oral cancer or other oral health concerns. Identifying them early allows us to recommend the right next steps for your care.

Super kind, responsive, and attentive dentist who accepts CDCP! I got a cleaning and appreciated the detailed X-ray and camera review of your teeth, the complimentary teeth whitening service, and super cute takeaway bag!
