The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a new federal program created to make dental care more affordable for Canadians. If you don’t have private dental insurance and your household income is below $90,000, you may qualify for help covering your dental costs.

What is CDCP, and what does it cover?

The CDCP is a government-funded dental benefit for eligible Canadian residents. It helps reduce out-of-pocket expenses for routine and preventive dental care, so more people can maintain a healthy smile without the financial strain. The CDCP includes coverage for essential dental services such as:

  • Routine cleanings and check-ups
  • X-rays and exams
  • Fillings, root canals, and extractions
  • Some dentures and oral surgery
  • Preventive and diagnostic services

What is CDCP, and what does it cover?

  • Date of birth
  • Full name
  • Home and mailing address
  • List of dental coverage through government social programs (if applicable)
  • Social Insurance Number (SIN), if available for children
  • Proof that you and your spouse or common-law partner filed your Canadian tax return for the previous year and received your notice of assessment

New applicants between the ages of 18 and 64 who don’t have private dental coverage can apply starting in May 2026. Coverage can begin as early as June 1, 2026. Applications go through Sun Life, the official provider of the CDCP.

Seniors aged 65 and older, adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate for 2023, and children under 18 who apply by April 30, 2026, must renew their coverage by June 1, 2026, to keep benefits for the 2026–2027 period.
