The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP): What You Need to Know

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a new federal program created to make dental care more affordable for Canadians. If you don’t have private dental insurance and your household income is below $90,000, you may qualify for help covering your dental costs.

What Is CDCP? What Does CDCP Cover?

The CDCP is a government-funded dental benefit for eligible Canadian residents. It helps reduce out-of-pocket expenses for routine and preventive dental care, so more people can maintain a healthy smile without the financial strain.

Why do you need CDCP?

Oral health is a key part of overall health, but dental care can be costly. If you don’t have access to private insurance, the CDCP helps ensure you and your family can get the dental care you need without the financial stress.

How to Apply for CDCP

New applicants between the ages of 18 and 64 who don’t have private dental coverage can apply starting in May 2025. Coverage can begin as early as June 1, 2025. Applications go through Sun Life, the official provider of the CDCP.

What You Need to Apply for CDCP

To apply, each applicant and their spouse or common-law partner (if applicable) must provide the following information:

  • Date of birth
  • Full name
  • Home and mailing address
  • List of dental coverage through government social programs (if applicable)
  • Social Insurance Number (SIN), if available for children
  • Proof that you and your spouse or common-law partner filed your Canadian tax return for the previous year and received your notice of assessment

Seniors aged 65 and older, adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate for 2023, and children under 18 who apply by April 30, 2025, must renew their coverage by June 1, 2025, to keep benefits for the 2025–2026 period.

How to Renew CDCP

If you’re already covered under the CDCP, you need to renew your coverage between March 1 and June 1, 2025. Renewing on time ensures there’s no interruption in your benefits.

The CDCP includes coverage for essential dental services such as:

  • Routine cleanings and check-ups
  • X-rays and exams
  • Fillings, root canals, and extractions
  • Some dentures and oral surgery
  • Preventive and diagnostic services

What Do You Need to Renew CDCP?

To renew your coverage, please provide the following information to confirm or update your records:

  • Client number
  • Details of any dental coverage through government social programs (if applicable)
  • Email address
  • Mailing and home address
